james taylor : rievers : tweed : an Otter

Day 1 of a surprise-destination birthday trip for Hector.
Listening to an old James Taylor album we drove up through the Scottish Borders amid the bleak Rievers country. Stopped off at Hermitage Castle (it as shut) and I found the cottage close by which friends and I had rented for a holiday when I was 16. Heady days! We had lunch at Kelso. Then eastward, back to England, to Berwick upon Tweed on the coast, where we were staying one night at the lovely Queens Head Hotel, near the harbour. It’s a lovely old town – and has a warm atmosphere.

Weather fine but it wasn’t meant to be. Lucky us. Wandered across the old bridge over the Tweed where we saw a seal in the river (a thrill), and later realised from a photo that a second seal we thought we had seen was in fact an otter! What a thrill! Then back over the larger, more modern, bridge. Later we had a lovely celebratory dinner at the hotel.
