Proud Auntie!

I’m a very proud Auntie…..

Clare got in to Newcastle Uni as a mature student (only 25 though) to study medicine and become a Doctor. She is already a Paramedic and has a degree or two as well. Her new life in Newcastle has begun and her studies start next week.

So, so proud of her.

She is also a pretty good climber.

August and AT LAST holidays!

Just WOW.
Sunset West
Rainbow over our house East 270 degree Panorama shot.
I didn’t know which way to face… West for the utterly amazing, changing every second sunset, or, the perfect full rainbow that was arched perfectly over our house, and was almost a double.
What a sight!
The sky really was that colour…

I reckon by the time you get to my age your brain needs defragging! All my memory and knowledge is bumping into each other and getting confused.

I had two whole weeks off! Bliss!

It began with a couple of days with my dearest friend in Lincolnshire. Weather was good too. We spent much of the weekend languishing in their huge new hot tub which is in a large open front chalet overlooking their garden and the countryside beyond. All mod cons with drinks fridge, speakers and food cupboard etc. Oh my oh my… how wonderfully luxurious. We spent almost four hours in it on the first evening and watched it go dark and counted the stars and drank a little too much bubbly. On the second day I was taken out for afternoon tea. Maybe I’ll share the tale of my friend and I this weekend trying to get into her large Mexican hammock which is strung up in the shade between two apple trees and seemed a good place to relax together! But then, maybe I won’t. Thank heavens no one saw us.
(Last time she and I shared the hammock a few years ago it was easy!)
At one point we seriously considered my trying to retrieve my phone from my pocket and calling for help! We made it all better with another evening in the hot tub.

I spent a day with Mum and sis in Ambleside, pottered at home and generally chilled until we were to head off for a week in Northumberland.
The night before we went our good friends Helene and Martin arrived to stay at the house while we were away for a little holiday themselves and we got the week off to a good start when we went out to dinner with them.

Northumberland holiday – hurrah

We spent the first week of September in a little harbourside cottage in Craster… just a few feet from the feet and harbour wall.
First stop – lunch in Corbridge. Had to have a browse in RE and a couple Of antique shops while we were there.

When we arrived in Craster the weather was calm and still and there was a fantastic full moon which from our cottage looked stunning.

Leaving the bedroom window wide open and with the hushing washing sound of the sea was HEAVEN!
The little ripples in the harbour shine in a spreading crescent in the moonshine.

While the sun was favouring us we spent several hours on Beadnell beach. Rosie loves beaches and sand. She goes bonkers!!

While out for the early morning wander with Rosie I couldn’t resist being a bit Andy Goldsworthy-esque and making a dinky obelisk

The next day we had a nice walk in Alnwick and around under the castle through the fields by the river.

Alnwick is a lovely town and feels like a real holiday when you sit out at a pavement cafe for lunch.

We ate out at the Jolly Fisherman most evenings – get food.

On the third day after a wild night of very high spring tide and waves crashing and roaring it was calmer and fine so we went to Warkworth Castle – a fine castle to visit – and then a couple of hours on the beach at Alnmouth. I finally got to paddle!

It got more windy during the evening and when it got dark there was a rescue exercise by the coastguard with a sea king helicopter and a coastguard boat out at sea. It looked terrifying.
In the early hours I was up at the bedroom window watching it get light as waves hurled themselves foamily over the harbour wall, swamping the fishing boats. It was very dramatic. One of the fishermen later told me he’d very rarely seen such conditions even in winter. These photos were taken from the bedroom window.

On the Wednesday is was wonderful that niece Clare came to join us for the day. As it was FAR TOO rough on the sea to take the boat trip to the Farne Islands we headed to Holy Island. We had a lovely wander around the harbour and a nice walk too. Clare and I built a cairn (not the biggest admittedly) to join all the others on the foreshore. We watched the seals out in the surf beyond the rocky shore. I gathered some little fossil pebbles to bring home for the garden(is that really naughty?) The garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll was one of the most beautiful I have every seen. A genius display and so interestingly out of context a bit in its own walled area in the midst of open fields and close to the sea shore. We parked up on the causeway for a short while and I thought the car look really incongruous there.

More wild weather overnight but quite thrilling!

Thursday was almost damp so we got the bus – for a change – into Alnwick. I spent an hour or so in Barter Books and a pavement cafe. A good way to see the view, especially on the top of a double decker.

On our last day we drove to Warkworth again to look around the village. A nice walk by the river and that. Very pleasant.
On the way back we went to Amble and parked up near the yacht club to sit a while overlooking the old braids and mudflats. Lots of wonderful wild birds… But Rosie had clearly had enough of walking around and tried to refuse to get out of the car!

In the evening we met our friends who live in Alnwick, but have a holiday home here, at the Jolly Fisherman for dinner before going back to the cottage to pack.
