20 years in this lovely special house

I moved into this house in 1994. Hard to believe 20 years has gone by. I have always loved the house and felt more at home here than anywhere in my whole life. The circumstances of moving here werent so positive but the house, well, its always made me happy and engendered a feeling of calm and safety. The village too is a wonderful place to live. A good community and an attractive area. We enjoy the social aspect- albeit a quiet kind of social life, and the surroundings. For nearly half that time Hector has been here too which made it even more special.

This year it has been a joy to improve the two not-so-nice areas of the house. Firstly was the renovation of the back yard – now known as the Sitootery (a term suggested by my lovely, artistic and interesting friend Liz). I have covered its creation on this blog earlier. It is and will be a wonderful space and was been worth all the work.

Then, for the last two weeks a builder/handyman has been here totally revamping the very grotty utility room. In truth the term utility room makes it sound ok. It wasnt and never had been. It was really awful.

Its been totally gutted, re-plastered, new flooring and I splashed out (forgive the pun) on a sink and toilet so that we can have a downstair cloakroom. The washing machine and tumbler are still in there but quite unobtrusive behind the door and some stained boarding to match the new skirting boards. I had the tumbler plumbed in so that it empties steam and water into the drain. It was finished yesterday and since then Ive added a few little touches to give it some character.

So….. before the work (though after it was cleared out)…….

And TA DA! After it is finished…..

I wonder how long it will take us to get used to not going upstairs to the bathroom!

Salkeld Dukes – for one night only

Hector and his band – the Salkeld Dukes! (Hector, bass; Adam, guitar and singing, Joe, lead vocals and guitar) did one night only gig for Adams 30th party at the pub. Adam is a goalie for Rotherham United and from the village. It was a much anticipated and big party. 150+ people there.
They had practiced a bit and on the night were brill! I was so proud of them, especially Hector of course. The theme for the party was Rock Gods and Rock Chicks. Ive never seen so many nylon wigs in one place. What a laugh.

Train trip to Ribblehead – a favourite thing to do

We LOVE a train trip on the Settle-Carlisle line to Ribblehead for a day. A blustery but fine day…. Rosie had a good run around and we walked along the paths to Blea Moor. Then a hearty lunch at the Station Inn before getting the train home. I discovered that a train drop down tray on was a perfect bed for Rosie when covered with her fleecy jacket.

Another lovely day visiting Mum

A Friday visit to Mum in Ambleside as always and I drove back over Kirkstone Pass in wonderful late Autumn colours.

I also made the mistake of going into the Hayes of Ambleside Christmas Hall…. tacky tacky tacky. An assault on the senses! The big gnomes were set to sing and speak as gruff Cumbrians in a shuddersome sketch. Horrid!
