Northumberland Holiday

We spent a week in Northumberland in a cottage just next to the sea at Embleton Bay. BLISS. I was better but sadly Hector was ill from day one. By the Tuesday a nasty rash had appeared and it obvious to me that it was shingles. So we went to Alnwick A&E where he was seen quickly and given heavy duty anti-virals. I think they stopped it in its tracks, but bless him he was very poorly. Not sleeping, lots of pain and discomfort. I felt helpless and he was wonderfully patient.

Beaches – sand – castles – paddling – wildlife

A holiday diary…

DAY 1.
VERY happy to be by the sea at Dunstan Stead… Fab little cottage. But quick unpack and a much anticipated dash to the wide beach for a PADDLE!!!!!! Rosie went bonkers rushing around in the sand and not daring to follow me into the sea. She ended up sitting with Hector while I paddled and dabbled.
This evening a fish and chip supper at the little fishing village of Craster.

DAY 2.
While H slept I got up and went to the beach early. GORGEOUS. Just me and Rosie.

We had a drive out to Seahouses and a wander at the harbour. The weather is so good I bought a pair of shorts!

It””s me, your Kathy! I””ve come home….
Let me in at your window-ow-oh-oh-ow!

We had dinner at a little pub in Embleton. MASSIVE pizzas.

DAY 3.
Lovely weather so we headed our to walk to Dunstanburgh Castle. It was a wonderful walk and the castle interesting and pleasant.

We had dinner at Dunstan Hotel at Embleton. Very old fashioned – reminded me of The George in Penrith.
Hector not improving health wise but at that time we didn””t know it was shingles.

DAY 4.
Monday morning and we went into Alnwick to find a pharmacy to see if they could help Hector. At the time we thought it was maybe a bad tummy, though that didn””t explain the pain.
After that he had a quiet day at the cottage and I had a few hours out looking at Howick Hall – the home of the famous Early Grey (of tea fame). Gorgeous mature gardens. And tea (Earl Grey obviously!) and cake in the tea room which used to be the ballroom. On the way back I stopped by the cliffs at Howick and had a short walk along the path. The geology is fascinating.

Our cottage was surrounded by wheat fields and while we were there the combines were out bringing it in. Golden glowing fields in strong sun. Beautiful.

Later in the afternoon I set off along the track behind the cottage. Just 500 yards or so inland it follows parallel to the coast south past the castle. Quiet and peaceful and interesting.
On this holiday I am managing to walk quite a few miles…

DAY 5.
Hector””s rash has appeared and its obvious he isn””t well at all. Looked like shingles to me, so we went to Alnwick to A&E where it was confirmed and he was given heavy duty anti-viral meds. Poor guy. As it turns out I think the meds stopped it in its tracks though he””s been unwell for a long time.
We headed north after the hospital to Holy Island. I love the place. Just love it. Hector settled on a seat and I explored with Rosie and my camera!
I wandered around the little harbour and then set out on a longer walk up through the islands interior to the north shore and back along the east shore to the Castle and eventually back to where Hector was waiting.
It was a fabulous walk. Fabulous.

Rosie LOVED the beaches everywhere we went!!!

DAY 6.
A bit more overcast. We headed a little south to Alnmouth. A look around a bit of the village and while Hector sat with a view of the sea I walked along the beach. Lovely. Obviously! I walked the whole way to the rocks at the north end and spend quite a while rock-pooling. Rosie wasn”t keen on coming into the water, but did, hopping one rock to anthers, or one clump of bladderwrack to an other…

DAY 7.
Lovely day again. We went to Beadnell. Spent most of the day sitting on our camp chairs on the beach. I did a lot of paddling and rock-pooling. Perfect day. In the evening we ate at the fabulous pub at Newton just a mile or so from our cottage. I had lobster and it was great. Pricey – but great.

DAY 8. HOMEWARDS….
I am sad that Hector has missed out on a lovely holiday. He was so poorly….
Before we left I went down very early to the beach and said ”goodbye”. Its very rare for me to be so sad at a holiday ending. I loved the place. Just loved it.

August 2104

So, now its October and I am remembering what we did in August….

The month started well when Mum was able to go home from hospital. A big relief.
Sis and brother especially have done fantastically visiting and sorting out her apartment with kit for her safe return.

I had a trip out to Larch Cottage Nursery for lunch with Adele one Friday. I LOVE it there.
LArch cottage

Interesting….. An Australian TV company are buying a license from me to show my starling film. A few extra quid coming my way. It just keeps rolling that film! On YouTube it”s had 600,000 views.

Went to find some quiet in the church one day…. Just me and Rosie and with Frank Cat howling outside the big old wooden door to come in too.

We”ve had some wonderful weather this summer. Lots of time to spend in the garden.

The only thing to mar it is my increasing achy and stiff joints… and upper arms. The Doc says its arthritis and wear and tear and problems from my old neck injury. Whatever it is its having a big impact on my life. Walking is painful and slow and I can only manage a couple of miles at maximum. Getting down onto my knees or bending is nigh on impossible. Surely I am too young for this….

Our holidays were the end of August and beginning os September. Mine started a week earlier than Hector, but I spent most of that week in bed with a really nasty cough. I thought sunshine would make me feel better… Look who joined me. I love my little Rosie Posie!
Sunning with Rosie
While I was poorly a very sweet friend who I had to let down (coz I was poorly) this week for a girls trip to a nice gallery, has popped round to see how I was, tell me that next time she goes I should go too coz I”d love it, and to bring me a gorgeous felt brooch she bought me from the gallery. Isn”t that lovely?
