An hour gained? Nope

We looked forward to an extra hour this weekend with the clocks going back one hour.
BUT its just taken me more than that hour to go around the various clocks etc in the house, the timers, alarm clocks and those on cookers, microwaves etc, timers on plugs et al and scrabbling around for user manuals to change everything to the new time! Arghhhhhhhhhhhh!

Ice preventer DOES NOT WORK!

You see it for sale so you buy it. Spray on ice preventer for car windscreens to ‘prevent’ ice forming over night. Oh really?? IT DOES NOT WORK. In fact it changes the ice to be more sheet and hard than crystal so even more difficult to scrape off.

Sis taking in the view at Hartside.

Sis taking in the view, originally uploaded by Fi in Eden.

Jane came to visit us for the weekend. Saturday we had a ride out to town and tea and cake and today, Sunday, we went out early to catch the frosty morning clear light and had a drive up to Hartside, and more cake and hot choc at the Village Bakery at Melmoerby. A lovely weekend.

New look to the house

Its been a lot of work, especially for Hector who has been painting for weeks in his spare time, but now that the new carpets are down. Now the kitchen is the same background colour as the lounge and the hall/stairs and balcony. All the little finishing touches done its looking great. It took ages to choose the cuhion covers – good old ebay for price and plethora of choices. The little Juliet Balcony above the stairs is for the first time ever a nice feature instead of an eyesore. loungeIMG_0266iris cushionpear cushion

A horse called ‘Lonely’ and a brilliant gig

My friend Kate introduced me to Lonely; a horse in a field and orchard next door to her. He is out in all weathers and although has water doesn’t appear to be fed anything extra so eats just the grass. He looks quite old and has a very sunken back and a few ribs showing through. Kate started visiting him twice a day with a carrot or two and some friendly company so as she is now back home in Somerset I have taken it on – gladly. Kate also left me with a lovely poem she wrote about Lonely.

So, I stop by on my way to and from work with a few carrots which he seems to love. After only a few days he greets me with a happy whinny and trots over straight away.
I took a quick picture of him with my phone….
'Lonely'

On Thursday evening we saw Spiers and Boden in Carlisle, meeting up with Heather and Alex (great!). One of the best gigs I’ve ever seen. I loved every minute. Hector bought me the CD and we got it signed and I took this pic of the guys. Nice one of JB!

BIG things at work but all calm when I visited Chrissie on the way back from Porkpie-ville (aka Melton Mowbray)

BIG event at work in Leicestershire. I’d spent MONTHS on it and was relieved and happy when it went well. Exhausted too.
So, I went to visit Chrissie for the night on my way back home and had a simply wonderful time. She persauded me to stay a few extra hours on Sunday and we went to Cleethorpes in sun and calm and clear weather and ate the BEST chips ever while barefoot on the sand. Heaven. Chrissie fell in which was delightfully funny. We paddled and then had ice cream before heading back.
Here’s me taking a picture of her taking a picture of me taking a picture of her….

Chile miners prove themselves Gentlemen

I can’t help but feel that if it had been UK miners in the same predicament as the Chilean miners the underground life would have degenerated into anarchy and unpleasant behaviour, whereas the Chileans were organsied, disciplined and set a fine example. And then on escaping the confines of the depths they have apparently shunned singular promotional glory and financial gain and have insisted on a unified front to the press, media and ongoing interest. I am a little sad and ashamed to feel that a UK miner in the same situation would have stumbled out of the escape pod, into the arms of Max Clifford and in front of the lens and open cheque books of the tabloid press and it be every man for himself. Within days the press would be full of stories of bullying and bad behaviour, feuds and fights. I shouldn’t assume I know, but does anyone really think it would have been any different?

Slanty shiny golden autumn sunshine

The last few days have been beautiful. Glorious clear bright weather with morning frost and river mist and then blue skies and almost t-shirt temperatures.
Hector got back from a couple of days away and this evening we’re having Frank and Kate round for drinks. It’ll be some good social time before the madness of a two day conference this weekend (I’ve done 90% of ALL the prep work for it on every level and there’ll be 200 people there!) Then next week the excitement of new carpets. Crikey – I’ve jsut realised how old this post makes me sound…. Hey ho.

a short walk from home

a new view of Eden Vale, originally uploaded by Fi in Eden.

Hector is away this weekend so after he set off I went for a little walk and above the valley along the old drovers route. Autumn was all around. The colours, the fungi, the wildlife. It was a lovely hour.

Its been a weekend of great autumnal almost summery weather. I’ve been outside a lot. The garden is looking good even now – dahlia’s and russet autumnal colours. And, strangely, for the first time the lawn is covered in fungi. don’t know what kind they are, but they are quite nice.

We’re still in the midst of decorating the hall and stairs and Juliet balcony but I stopped when I ran out of paint. Once the new carpet is down it’ll all be worth it.

Meanwhile, Hector is having a great boys weekend with old friends and plenty beer.

My new red friend, originally uploaded by Fi in Eden.

My new red squiggle friend. What a shame that Hector wasn’t with me to meet him too.

From now on I will call this Red Squiggle Stream

From now on I will call this Red Squirrel Stream, originally uploaded by Fi in Eden.

While taking this photo on the way back from taking stuff to the village recycling place I had a wonderfully close encounter with a red squirrel, so the stream henceforth will be Red Squiggle Stream. Ever since I saw him I have been smiling.
